Obituary for Lawrence David "Larry" Levine

A gentle and kind man has gone to his eternal rest. 

Lawrence David Levine was 90 years young. He was the loving and gentle husband of Ora Beth Levine for 66 years. He was a resident of Northbrook, IL for 53 years.

He was blessed with 3 wonderful children, Jill Debra Shirley, Jonathan Daniel Levine and Theodore Samuel Levine.

Jill and Freddie, Jonathan and Tracey, Teddy and Dawn gifted Larry with 9 grand children, Ian and Spencer, Shirley, and the late Zak Shirley, Lauren, Lindsay, Jordan and Skyler Levine, Max And Myles Levine. In addition, he enjoyed his two pinchable great grandchildren, Milo and Flora.

He had innumerable grand animals including Loki, Roxy, Montana, Radly and Laika (dogs), Joe and Camilla (cats), and Patsy and Loretta (goats).

Mr. Levine was born and raised in Washington, D.C. The son of the late Max and Zelda Levine, he attended the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, MD. He was a graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy. Larry served 5 1/2 years in the Coast Guard, with assignments ranging from weather patrol in the North Atlantic in winter, to being commanding officer of a LORAN station on Guam, and sailing to Europe on the Coast Guard Tall Ship ,EAGLE.

He received his master’s degree at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. After working at General Electric Company and the Arthur D. Little management consulting firm for many years, he purchased the Onsrud Machine Corporation, that he owned in Wheeling, IL for several years.

He was a captain in the Coast Guard Reserve, and served as the CEO of reserve units in Wisconsin  and Illinois for many years,

Lawrence was a long time member of Congregation Beth Shalom in Northbrook, and served on its board of directors for several years.

He and Beth loved to travel and visited all 7 continents, over 120 countries and islands, and went on over 45 cruises. He was an avid tennis player and captained the Northbrook men’s team. He was a member of the Northbrook Rotary Club and went to Guatemala with members of the group to build an orphanage. 

He was a loyal and longtime suffering White Sox fan.

Larry never met a brisket or chocolate cake he didn’t love.

His family is grateful to Sheila and Gita for their tender care.

Private services have been held by the family. Exhibiting in death the same grace he had in life, Larry has donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois.

May his soul rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that any donations be made to the charity of your own choice.
