Obituary for Mari Cohen

Mari Cohen, nee Robinson, age 71, of Chicago, formerly of Britt, Iowa. At a young age, Mari fled the cornfields for the big city to be a buyer of women’s sportswear at Macy’s Department Store in New York City and was a Clown Captain in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for many years, often bringing her nephews with her. Upon relocating to Chicago, she earned her Certified Public Accountant certification, passing her licensure on her first try, while raising two young children. As a CPA, she joined Michael Friedland Ltd, where she was extremely respected and known for her engaging personality. Many of her loyal clients became her personal friends. One of Mari’s big accomplishments was riding her bike across Iowa at age 60 during RAGBRAI. She enjoyed walking, yoga, knitting, and sharing a great story. Mari recently retired to spend more time with her precious granddaughters, playing mah-jongg and traveling to her home in Florida. She is the beloved wife and life partner for 42 years of Arthur Cohen; loving mother of Jennifer (Bryan) Cowan and David (Caitlin) Cohen; adored Nama/grandma of Eleanor, Adeline, and Charlotte; favorite grandmother to Roscoe the dog; dear sister-in-law of Howard (Carole) Cohen and Toby Waller; treasured aunt, cousin, and friend to many. She will be dearly missed for her positive attitude, kindness, compassion, and strength to nurture lifelong friendships. Truly, her family was the center of her universe and she enjoyed living so close together in the city. The family is planning a life celebration for Mari at a future date.
