Obituary for Shawn Benjamin Gilley

Shawn Benjamin Gilley, born a musician, February 7, 1989, passed peacefully in his sleep, June 17, 2021, after a long battle with carcinoid cancer; loving husband of Arielle Gilley, nee Kaplan; beloved son of Sheri Gilley and the late David William Gilley; devoted grandson of Calvin and Sandra Deitz, Anne and the late William F. Gilley, and Al and June Blackman; cherished son-in-law of Karen and Robert Kaplan; dear brother-in-law of Sasha (Andreas) Papazafeiropoulos; treasured uncle of Penelope; special nephew of Ronald Deitz, Lori (Gregory) Barsh, and Lynne Larabee; treasured stepson of Debra Fleischman; fond stepbrother of Johanna Jameson and Rich (Kelsey) Grosse; cousin of Leah Jackson, Henry and Samuel Barsh, Christopher, Daniel, Hunter, and Justin Larabee; 2nd cousin to Leah’s children, Mya MacPherson, Maizy and Meadow Jackson.

Shawn enriched and profoundly touched the lives of all he met, as well as many who only knew him through his music and writings. He brought love, joy, laughter, and happiness into the lives of us all. His music touched our souls and his raw and gut-wrenchingly honest writing inspired many. Shawn’s memorial service will be Monday, 2:00 p.m. at Oak Park Temple, 1235 N. Harlem, Oak Park, IL 60302. Interment private. The service will be livestreamed at www.goldmanfuneralgroup.com.
