Obituary for Thomas L. Harris

Thomas L.  Harris
Thomas L. Harris died on March 26. Widowed by Joie Harris in 2012 he is survived by his sons Jim and Ted spouses Lynn and Phillip grandchildren Zack and Allie and his friend Donna Kahan. Harris was president vice chairman and partner of GolinHarris (now Golin) one of the world's largest public relations firms. Previously he was president of Foote Cone & Belding PR which he founded in 1973 executive vice president of Edelman and vice president public relations for Needham Harper & Steers (now DDB) and North Advertising. He was named one of the "100 Most Influential Public Relations People of the 20th Century" by PR Week. He was awarded the 2000 Gold Anvil Award the highest individual national award presented by the Public Relations Society of America. He was the author of five books about public relations and one book of personal essays. Harris was adjunct professor in the masters program in Integrated Marketing Communications at the Medill School of Journalism of Northwestern University. He was a lifetime jazz fan and had one of the largest collections of jazz recordings in the country. He taught courses in jazz and the Great American Songbook at Cal State University at San Bernardino and the North Shore Senior Center. His jazz collection now belongs to the University of Michigan and the American Jazz Institute. He holds a Bachelors degree from the University of Michigan and a Masters from the University of Chicago. His philanthropic efforts included work for AARP Anti-Defamation League American Cancer Society American Jewish Committee and Jewish United Fund. Service Wednesday 1:00 p.m. at Am Shalom 840 Vernon Ave. Glencoe. Interment Shalom Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Jewish United Foundation juf.org appreciated.
